Making the Decision to Volunteer

Volunteers are essential to the Capital of Texas Zoo. They assist zoo staff in many aspects of zoo operations and support the zoo in its mission to create a sustainable future for wildlife. If you are dedicated to wildlife conservation and want to put this dedication into practice, we invite you to consider volunteering at Capital of Texas Zoo.

Whether you are interested in assisting zoo visitors, presenting education programs, helping zookeepers with animal care, or assisting horticulture staff with maintaining the botanical collection, there are a wide variety of opportunities available.

Most volunteer positions require a specific time commitment. Some positions have specific age or previous experience requirements, as noted in the descriptions. All potential applicants are interviewed, and accepted volunteers must complete a new volunteer orientation and tuberculosis screening prior to beginning service. Applicants are accepted based upon the needs of the zoo. We welcome your inquiries about our programs and hope you consider applying for a volunteer position!

We need responsible people who can volunteer a minimum of 1 or 2 days per month in any of the following categories:

Docents:  As a docent you will interact with the public, handle admissions, sales and memberships, as well as educate visitors about our animals in the entry building (No prior knowledge needed…we will train you).

Gardeners: Help maintain our flower beds, including our Cactus of Texas display  which includes some endangered species.

Carpenters & Welders:  We build the exhibits ourselves, and would like to expand our list of people we can call on to help build new exhibits, as funds become available.

Animal Care:  This is the most demanding position and volunteers must first undergo a rigorous interview process.

Junior Curator Program

Are you looking for something fun to do during the summer? Are you at least 13?
Are you thinking about a career with Animals?
Come join the Capital of Texas Zoo as a volunteer Junior Curator.

You will work side by side with a zookeeper in many of  the aspects of running a zoo, learning about interesting animal facts and animal behaviors.

Junior Curators can come to the zoo as often as they want as long as it has been okayed by a Zoo curator or adult zookeeper.  Junior Curators must commit to one year of volunteering.  They are required to work one day a month during winter hours, and one day a week during summer hours and to work at least one holiday.
